Yes. All credential applicants must take and pass the basic skills test prior to admission into the program. Also see the CBEST web page. Multiple Subject Credential Program applicants must take and pass the CSET. While all credentialed teachers must have at least a bachelor's degree, a major foundation in working toward a credential is knowledge of the subject(s) to be taught. One way to achieve subject matter competence is to complete a major that is also a credential subject matter preparation program approved by the State of California. Completion of such a program is typically documented by an official letter from a Credential Analyst at the college/university where the program or a successful equivalency evaluation was completed.
Programs of this type are frequently referred to as “waiver” programs. People who earned their degrees out of state, or at a college/university that did not offer a subject matter preparation program may be eligible for an evaluation of their transcripts. At this time, CSUCI is unable to provide this service, as we do not currently offer any approved subject matter preparation programs. In 2004, CSUCI was granted approval for their subject matter preparation program in Mathematics.
New federal legislation, entitled “No Child Left Behind” (NCLB), will necessitate some changes in how prospective and current teachers will demonstrate they are proficient in the subject matter to be taught in their field. Previously, prospective teachers could complete a specialized bachelor’s degree, in California, with an emphasis in the subject matter content, or be evaluated for equivalency by a college with such a program. Due to NCLB provisions, this option may no longer be available for Elementary school teachers. For additional information, please read the release from the California State Board of Education linked below:
If you have completed a professional teacher preparation program including supervised student teaching in which a grade of “C” or better was earned and you were eligible for certification in that state, you may apply directly to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for a California Preliminary Teaching Credential. top
If the credential issued is a Professional Clear, contact the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for a re-issuance of the document. If additional course work is needed to renew the credential, you must request an evaluation of your transcripts by an Institution with an approved program to determine the remaining course work needed to clear your credential.
