Substitute Teaching Permit

Substitute teaching can help you decide whether a teaching career is right for you. Informational interviews with current or retired teachers are an excellent means to get a feel for the profession and whether it might be a good fit for you. There is a great deal of information available on the field of teaching. An excellent site to help you get started in the decision making process is Cal Teach, California’s teacher recruitment site linked below.

Substitute teachers must apply for a 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit. The permit limits the holder to teaching no more than 30 calendar days in a single classroom and is valid for one year. The requirements for the permit are a Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, passage of CBEST, a background check, and tuberculin clearance. Candidates may apply at school district offices.
