General Program Information

All prospective students are encouraged to attend a Credential Information Session to learn about teacher credentialing, program format & the application process/ admission requirements.


Credential Prerequisite Requirements

Each credential program has 5 different prerequisite courses that must be successfully completed before you can be considered for full admission to the School of Education. Bilingual authorization candidates are required to complete 3 additional prerequisites (8 total).

How can the credential prerequisites be completed?

Prerequisite applications are accepted in fall and spring.

Credential Prerequisite Courses

All prerequisite courses must be completed prior to beginning the Phase II of the credential program with a grade of “C” or better. Please note, however, that taking and successfully completing these prerequisite courses does not guarantee admission into Phase II of the credential program.

Multiple Subject Prerequisite Courses

Dual Credential candidates may complete either the Multiple Subject or Education Specialist prerequisite courses.

  • EDUC 475 (ENGL 475): Language in Social Context (3)
  • EDUC 412 (EDUC 512): Equity, Diversity and Foundations of Schooling (3)
  • SPED 345 (PSY 345): Individuals with Disabilities (3)
  • EDMS 422 (EDMS 522): Creating and Managing Effective Elementary School Learning Environments (5)
  • EDMS 410 (EDMS 510): Child Growth and Development during the Elementary School Years (3)

Single Subject Prerequisite Courses

  • EDUC 475 (ENGL 475): Language in Social Context (3)
  • EDUC 412 (EDUC 512): Equity, Diversity and Foundations of Schooling (3)
  • SPED 345 (PSY 345): Individuals with Disabilities (3)
  • EDSS 424 (EDSS 524): Creating and Managing Effective Secondary School Learning Environments (5)
  • EDSS 415 (EDSS 515): Adolescent Development for Secondary Educators (3)

Education Specialist Prerequisite Courses

Dual Credential candidates may complete either the Multiple Subject or Education Specialist prerequisite courses.

  • EDUC 475 (ENGL 475): Language in Social Context (3)
  • EDUC 412 (EDUC 512: Equity, Diversity and Foundations of Schooling (3)
  • SPED 345 (PSY 345): Individuals with Disabilities (3)
  • EDMS 422 (EDUC 522) OR EDSS 424 (EDUC 524): Creating and Managing Effective Elementary or Secondary Learning Environments (5)
  • SPED 410 (SPED 530): Typical and Atypical Development (3)

Bilingual Authorization Prerequisite Courses*

*Bilingual Added Authorization candidates must successfully complete 9 units of Bilingual Authorization prerequisite coursework to move forward with the bilingual methods courses and bilingual student teaching.

  • EDML 416: Foundations of Bilingual Education (3)
  • EDML 417: The Socio-Cultural Context of Bilingual Schooling (3)

AND One of the following:

  • CHS/EDUC 349: Chicana/o Latina/o and Education (3)
  • CHS/HIST 350: Chicana/o History and Culture (3)
  • CHS 402: Southern California Chicana/o (3)
  • EDUC/CHS 445: Chicano Child and Adolescent (3)
  • HIST 361: Modern Latin American History (3)

If you believe you have completed comparable coursework at a different university, you may petition to substitute a course by submitting a Course Substitution Request with all supporting documents to the Clinical Experiences and Partnerships Office.
