Do you want to work with middle school and high school age students (grades 6-12), to teach a subject you have a passion for, and to play a part in strengthening students’ development as lifelong learners? Then the Single Subject Teaching Credential Program is for you!

This program prepares CI teacher candidates to work with students in subject specific content areas in departmentalized middle, junior, and high schools. Across the program’s courses and field work in classrooms, candidates develop the skills to appreciate and capitalize on the diversity of languages and cultures encountered in California’s public-school classrooms. The belief that all children (regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, ability or economic status) are capable of learning and that educators make a difference in students’ lives provide the founding principles of the Single Subject Teaching Credential.

Upon completion of the program, candidates are eligible to apply for the Preliminary Single Subject Teaching Credential issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). Candidates must successfully meet or pass the Basic Skills requirement, the Subject Matter requirement and the CalTPA exam prior to being recommended for this credential

We currently offer Single Subject Credentials in the following subject areas:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Foundational Level Mathematics
  • Science (Biology, Chemistry, Geosciences, or Physics)
  • Foundational Level General Science
  • Social Science / History

Single Subject Teacher Candidates can also pursue an add-on Bilingual Authorization as part of the coursework. The details can be found on the Bilingual Authorization webpage.

Note: Undergraduate students are allowed to enroll in any professional preparation course. Full Admission to Phase II (Student Teaching and Methods Courses) of the Single Subject Credential Program requires successful completion of Phase I (prerequisites) and other applicable credential admission requirements.

All prospective students are encouraged to attend an information session to learn about teacher credentialing, program requirements, and application process.

The professors in my program went above and beyond to provide up-to-date methodology that best translated to the real-world classroom while also instilling age-old knowledge and wisdom into their coursework.
