In Ventura and Santa Barbara County, the sun breaking through the coastal fog is a welcomed and often occurrence, bringing light and warmth to the California coastline communities. The sun also has more profound symbolism and spiritual meaning. To many indigenous cultures on the west coast, the sun symbolizes life-giving abundance with its warmth radiating healing and peace. To the Chumash people, the sun is an entity of resurrection, casting light across the abyss and leading the souls who have passed on back into the world. The symbolism of the sun goes hand-in-hand with the goals which DELEJ and other movements of equity and justice look to bring to education and our society as a whole; radiating hope, love, healing, and peace to turbulent times, advancing our nation to a brighter future for all.
