The Disability Studies (DS) Emphasis prepares teachers and professionals for leadership roles in the field of special education and disabilities. Graduates develop, implement, and evaluate programs and policies for individuals with disabilities; mentor special education teachers and allied professionals; conduct professional development and research; serve on policy committees; and advocate for the rights of individuals with disabilities.


Important:The MA in Education is currently under revision. The Teacher Education Department has proposed the MA in Curriculum & Instruction (30 units) and the MA in Special Education (30-33) units. If approved, these programs are projected begin Fall 2026. We will be accepting applications for the Curriculum & Instruction and Disability Studies emphases with the intention of moving all applicants to the new program when final approval is made. Additional information about the programs will be explained at an upcoming Information Session.
